In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
“Who is your Lord?”
A question all of us would be asked in the grave. One time early in my life, when I first heard from my teacher at the time that we would be asked three questions in the grave and some people would be unable to answer, I went on to memorize the answers to the three questions in arabic and english to ensure I had my bases covered. If only it was that easy!
One God: This is the foundation of our faith. There is no God except Allah! The One Rabb who is for all of us - Our Nourisher, Sustainer, Provider and Lord. The same One who Created us, The One with whom we hope to be reunited in Jannah and the One whose pleasure we seek.
Many names: Simply because He is and He can. Each name, when we allow ourselves to connect to it is deep and beautiful and so powerful. It has been said that the more names “something” has, the more important it is.
وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا
And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. [Qur’an 7:180]
قُلِ ادْعُوا اللَّهَ أَوِ ادْعُوا الرَّحْمَٰنَ ۖ أَيًّا مَّا تَدْعُوا فَلَهُ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَىٰ
Say, "Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." [Qur’an 17:110]
Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allah has ninety-nine names. Whoever preserves them will enter Paradise.”
As we go through all our different trials and tests, having that access to Allah ﷻ through His names brings solace in such a unique way.
Our Lord is Al Mujīb. Deep it! He is not only As-Samī - The All-Hearing. Which means He does not just listen, He also responds. For context, in certain situations, you just need someone to hear you out and that suffices you. Then He is Al-Alīm which means He knows whether you tell Him or not. He. Always. Knows. And He is Al-Adl which means He is just and does not oppress anyone.
He is Al-Fattah - He opens not just doors but our hearts, to guidance, to love - the giving and the receiving. He opens the door of His knowledge and His mercy and His blessings.
He is Ar-Razzaq - the Perpetual Provider irrespective of the economy or stock market and His is completely tax-free. This provision is not just wealth and riches but also a healthy body, a sane, sound mind, knowledge, safety, time and even the ability to memorize an ayah, a surah or the who Qur’an. His rizq is guidance, faith, and even the ability to do good and then earn the rewards which He gives His servants as they do good, in His obedience cos Our Lord is Ash-Shakoor. He is Ever-Appreciative, so do not belittle your acts of good, in fact, be grateful for all of it because He has promised to give you more and His promise is true.
A Lord that calls out to us to call Him and ask of Him, as we are, flawed, broken, imperfect and He will respond. Such Lordship! Such Love! He is Al Wadud - And this love, His Love, is the greatest Love of All.
And so I submit to the Lord of the Worlds.
